Ormax Media’s Annual Report Reveals Indian Box Office Achieves Record-breaking Collection of Rs 12,226 Crore in 2023
Ormax Media has recently unveiled its annual report, titled “The Ormax Box Office Report 2023,” offering insights into the Indian film industry’s performance across languages. The 2023 box office in India reached a historic high of Rs 12,226 crore, surpassing the previous record of Rs 10,948 crore in 2019 and indicating a robust 15% growth from 2022.
This notable collection signals a substantial recovery for the Indian film industry post-pandemic, considering the combined revenues of 2020 and 2021 were a mere ₹5,757 crore, which rose to Rs 10,637 crore in 2022.
Hindi cinema played a significant role in this surge, contributing Rs 5,380 crore and surpassing the Rs 5,000 crore mark for the first time. The share of Hindi cinema in the total box office (44%) also rebounded to pre-pandemic levels, up from 33% in 2022.
Among regional cinemas, Tamil and Telugu films experienced growth of 14% and 6%, respectively, compared to 2022, while Punjabi cinema witnessed an impressive 60% increase in box office earnings. In contrast, Kannada and Hollywood cinema faced a steep decline of 61% and 7% in gross box office collection in 2023.
Despite more than 1,000 films being released, the top 10 movies accounted for only 40% of the total box office earnings. Shah Rukh Khan’s “Jawan” emerged as the highest-grossing film of 2023 with Rs 734 crore, followed by “Animal” (Rs 645 crore), “Pathaan” (Rs 636 crore), “Gadar-2” (Rs 619 crore), and “Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire” (Rs 512 crore).
Interestingly, the top four films of 2023 were original Hindi-language productions, marking a departure from the previous year, which saw South Indian films dominating the top ten, including “K.G.F. Chapter 2,” “RRR,” and “Kantara.”
South Indian films, such as “Salaar: Part 1—Ceasefire,” Rajnikanth’s “Jailer,” and Vijay’s “Leo,” emerged as the highest-grossing in their category, each surpassing the Rs 400 crore milestone at the Indian box office.
Cinema attendance witnessed a 6% increase in 2023 compared to 2022, reaching Rs 94.3 crore, although it fell short of the pre-pandemic peak of Rs 103 crore in 2019. Hollywood footfalls in India dropped below the Rs 5 crore mark for the first time since 2014.
The Average Ticket Price (ATP) experienced a 9% rise in 2023, climbing from Rs 119 to Rs 130. This increase was attributed to the growing box office contribution from Hindi cinema, known for its higher ATP compared to South-language films.
