“Jigra,” Starring Alia Bhatt, Struggles at Box Office Despite Strong Buzz

The much-anticipated Jigra, starring Alia Bhatt and directed by Vasan Bala, has failed to make a significant impact at the box office in its opening weekend. Despite high expectations and the powerful backing of Dharma Productions and Eternal Sunshine Productions, the film managed to collect only ₹16.64 crore in its first three days in India, a far cry from what was expected for an Alia Bhatt-led project.

Jigra opened on Friday with a modest ₹4.55 crore, followed by ₹6.58 crore on Saturday, but failed to maintain momentum on Sunday, adding just ₹5.51 crore to its total. With a combined weekend total of ₹16.64 crore, the film has underperformed, especially in comparison to Bhatt’s previous women-centric hits like Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022) and Raazi (2018), which both opened to much stronger numbers.

One of the key reasons behind Jigra’s underperformance appears to be its limited urban-centric appeal. While the film resonated well in a few major cities, it struggled to connect with audiences in mass circuits, where the response has been underwhelming. The film’s narrative and appeal seem to have failed in attracting a broader demographic beyond metropolitan centres, which could explain the lackluster numbers in smaller towns and cities.

However, Jigra does have a crucial window of opportunity, as the film faces no major competition until the Diwali releases. For Jigra to recover its shortfall and achieve a respectable Week 1 total, it’s essential for the film’s Monday to Thursday numbers to stabilize and maintain consistency. The film, which centers around a young woman’s quest to rescue her brother from prison, had high expectations due to its star power and intriguing premise, but the box office figures tell a different story.

The film’s performance in the coming days will determine whether it can bounce back from this disappointing start, but with competition looming in the festive season, the road ahead looks challenging.
