Veteran Director-Cinematographer Prem Sagar Passes Away at 84

Mumbai, August 31, 2025 – The Indian entertainment industry mourns the loss of Prem Sagar, the esteemed director-cinematographer and son of legendary filmmaker Ramanand Sagar, who passed away on Sunday morning at his residence in Mumbai. He was 84.

Prem Sagar had been battling health issues for some time and was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital for three weeks. According to his younger brother, Moti Sagar, he was discharged on Saturday after an infection spread in his blood, and doctors advised the family to bring him home. He breathed his last around 10 AM on Sunday.

A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Prem Sagar carved a niche for himself in the industry with his multifaceted contributions. He showcased his cinematography skills in notable films such as Charas and Lalkar, and took on the roles of producer and director for iconic television shows like Alif Laila and Vikram and Betaal. His work helped bring captivating storytelling to Indian households, continuing the legacy of his father, Ramanand Sagar, renowned for the iconic TV serial Ramayan.

Prem also ventured into acting, appearing in films like Namak Halal, Nishchaiy, Ek Ladka Ek Ladki, Jawani Zindabad, and Sagar Sangam, displaying his versatility across different facets of filmmaking.

Arun Govil, the actor who portrayed Lord Ram in Ramayan, expressed his grief on social media, writing, “The news of the demise of Shri Prem Sagar ji, son of the late Shri Ramanand Sagar ji, who, through the Ramayan TV serial, brought Lord Shri Ram’s dignity, ideals, and teachings to every household via electronic media, is deeply saddening. We pray to Lord Shri Ram to grant the departed soul a place at His divine feet and to give strength to the bereaved family. Om Shanti.”

The last rites were performed at the Pawan Hans crematorium in Juhu at around 3 PM on Sunday. Prem Sagar is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son.

The passing of Prem Sagar marks the end of an era for Indian cinema and television, leaving behind a legacy of creativity and storytelling that will continue to inspire generations.
