As a filmmaker and storyteller, I’ve encountered countless narratives, but few carry the emotional depth of How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, now streaming on Netflix. This beautifully crafted film is a heartfelt reminder of the timeless bond between generations, underscored by themes of love, family, and the wisdom of elders. While it begins with a slow and steady pace, it blossoms into a poignant journey that leaves you with tears in your eyes and a heart full of cherished memories.

A Story Rooted in Emotion

At the heart of the story is the touching relationship between a young, ambitious grandson and his wise, loving grandmother. Their portrayal is the film’s soul, anchoring the narrative with authenticity and warmth. But what elevates this film even further is how every character contributes meaningfully to the story, with performances that are natural and impactful, creating a world that feels real and relatable.

Performances That Resonate

The grandmother’s character, brimming with wisdom and tenderness, becomes the emotional cornerstone of the film. The grandson’s journey of self-discovery is equally compelling, capturing the dualities of ambition and familial loyalty. Every actor in the ensemble cast has delivered nuanced performances, making each character memorable and adding layers to the narrative.

Masterful Direction and Craftsmanship

The director weaves this tale with a delicate touch, ensuring every scene carries emotional weight. The cinematography complements the intimacy of the story, while the music underscores its most heartfelt moments without overshadowing the performances. It’s a testament to how simplicity in filmmaking, when done right, can create something extraordinary.

Why I Recommend This Film

How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies is more than just a film; it’s a celebration of the relationships and memories that define our lives. It’s a story that makes you pause, reflect, and appreciate the wisdom and love shared by the older generations. As a creator, I found it deeply inspiring, and as a viewer, it moved me profoundly.

Final Thoughts

This film is a cinematic treasure that lingers with you long after the credits roll. I highly recommend How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies to anyone who values heartfelt storytelling. It’s an unforgettable experience that reminds us of the power of family, the beauty of simple moments, and the lessons that shape our lives.

After 24 years of working in journalism, media, and the film industry, I’ve witnessed movies that shock, movies that amaze, and movies that simply confuse. Despatch, directed by Kanu Behl and streaming on Zee5, unfortunately falls into a fourth category—a baffling headache-inducing experience that tests your patience and sanity.

Starring Manoj Bajpayee—an actor of immense talent—this film reduces him to an unnecessary portrayal of nudity and bizarre sequences that add absolutely nothing to the narrative. Bajpayee plays a journalist tangled in a convoluted world of crime, politics, and betrayal, working for a fictional newspaper named Despatch. What could have been an intriguing thriller ends up being an indecipherable mess.

A Story That Doesn’t Exist

The film’s plot (if one can even call it that) is nearly impossible to follow. Kanu Behl attempts to take viewers through the underbelly of investigative journalism, but instead, we’re dragged into a whirlwind of disconnected scenes, sluggish pacing, and head-scratching dialogues. It feels as though the movie didn’t know what it wanted to be—a noir thriller, an intellectual commentary, or something else entirely.

Bajpayee’s character is caught between exposing conspiracies and grappling with his own dilemmas, but none of it translates into anything meaningful on-screen. The story lacks coherence, the characters lack depth, and most importantly, there is no emotional connection to any part of the film.

Unnecessary Boldness

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room—the forced nudity and so-called bold content. If Despatch wanted to push boundaries, it did so in the most unproductive way possible. The nudity seems gratuitous, the adult themes unnecessary, and the execution lazy. If you’re going to make such content, at least back it up with a story that keeps the audience engaged.

Instead, we’re left asking: Why? Why was Manoj Bajpayee subjected to these poorly justified sequences? Why did the film feel like it was trying so hard to be edgy without a shred of creativity?

Technical Aspects

The cinematography and production design, though passable, cannot save this disaster. The dark and gritty visuals fail to create any suspense because the storytelling itself lacks focus. The editing is jarring, leaving scenes hanging with no sense of rhythm or resolution. Background music, meant to amplify tension, ends up being as confusing as the script.

Dimaag Ki Dahi

Watching Despatch feels less like experiencing a film and more like enduring an ordeal. It’s the kind of movie that will leave you reaching for a headache tablet first and, perhaps ironically, something light and entertaining later—like xxx films that at least know their purpose. Despatch tries to be smart but ends up being pretentious and painfully boring.

Final Thoughts

Kanu Behl’s Despatch is a classic example of wasted potential. With a brilliant actor like Manoj Bajpayee and the premise of investigative journalism, this film had all the ingredients to deliver a gripping thriller. Instead, it delivers confusion, frustration, and dimaag ki dahi.

If you value your time and sanity, skip this one.

The year 2020 been utterly disastrous. This is for not only the common man but all the industries small and big that have been affected by the virus.

Since we are into films, we shall talk about on the same. Today our topic is film distribution and how film distributors particularly the ones dealing with Hindi films are facing the heat and are in a spot.

The Hindi film distribution has six major circuits namely the Bombay circuit, the eastern circuit, the Delhi-UP circuit, the C.P.-C.I. Rajasthan circuit, the Punjab circuit and the South circuit.

Ever since the outbreak of the Coronavirus and the follow up of the Lockdown from March 23, the film industry has come to a virtual standstill with no shooting of films, no cinema halls or multiplexes (exhibitors) to screen films. Naturally distributors have been severely affected.

Says Chandresh Sharma of Bhagyashree Films, “We, the distributors based in Mumbai are the worst hit. Where on one side shooting of films have come to a standstill, on the other side dist there are no good releases to hit the screen that are themselves closed. I only ask as to how shall we sustain ourselves in the current circumstances.”

So hard has the pandemic struck that we hear that a distributor has taken to the selling of vegetables like a lot many people who have been waylaid.

Avers  Sameer Dixit of Pickle Entertainment,” The situation today is worse than expected. Since the opening of theatres has yet not been fixed, producers aren’t able to fix their release dates. Besides single-screen theatres are in no mood to open up because as it is they have suffered a huge loss because of the lockdown. Moreover, after the government declaring that film theatres should open to their 50 per cent capacity, they are more than dissatisfied. Plus they have to bear added expenses like sanitising the hall after every screening, dispense sanitising liquid to the audience coming in to see a film. Plus any casualty happening when a show is in progress has to be borne by the hall owners.” Moreover, no significant film is due to release immediately. Rohit Shetty’s Shooryavanshi and Salman Khan’s Radhe will only release next year in January, the earliest is Akshay Kumar’s Laxmi Bomb that is to release on 9th November. In between, there are no good films worth the mention that is slated to open. If my calculation is right, we have to do with films like Angrezi Medium, Baghi among others.”

Among all this hotchpotch, two developments have transformed the landscape of film of Hindi films in particular. The first is the emergence of TVoD (transactional video-on-demand) platforms such as Google Play, iTunes, Vimeo and India’s TVF In Box Office, While the first is the emergence of TVoD (transactional video-on-demand) platforms such as Google Play, iTunes, Vimeo and India’s TVF InBox Office that enable filmmakers to sell their films directly to audiences, the second is the entry of the global SVoD (subscription video-on-demand) giants. Netflix, which launched in India in January and Amazon Prime Video.

Coming to Amazon Prime Video, it is to globally premiere 9 highly-anticipated movies across 5 Indian languages directly on its service. Following the success of past premieres, the new slate comprises of nine exciting titles spanning 5 Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

The films are: Halal Love Story (Malayalam)-  15th Oct, Bheema Sena Nalamaharaja (Kannada), 29th Oct, Soorarai Pottru (Tamil)- 30th Oct,  Chhalaang (Hindi)- 13th Nov,  Manne Number 13 (Kannada)- 19th Nov, Middle Class Melodies (Telugu)- 20th Nov, Durgavati (Hindi)- 11th Dec (Bhumi Pednekar), Maara (Tamil)-17th Dec (R Madhavan) and Coolie No. 1 (Hindi) directed by David Dhawan- 25th December. The films will premiere exclusively on Prime Video and will be available in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

Adds Dilip Dhanwani of Royal Film Company,“Let me say that a film’s box office performance does not worry me. I accept medium budget movies, may they be Hindi, Bhojpuri or any other regional ones. I release these movies on a commission basis.”

All in all, the pandemic has taken everyone in its loop with one not knowing what to do? If there is any solution, what is it?
