Mumbai, June 23, 2025 – Aamir Khan’s much-anticipated film Sitaare Zameen Par has taken the box office by storm, delivering a stellar opening weekend with a nett collection of ₹57.30 crore in India. Directed by R.S. Prasanna, the sports comedy-drama has struck a chord with audiences, particularly in urban centers and premium multiplexes, riding a wave of positive word-of-mouth that has fueled its phenomenal day-on-day growth.
The film, a spiritual sequel to the 2007 classic Taare Zameen Par, opened on Friday, June 20, with a solid ₹10.70 crore. It saw a remarkable 86% jump on Saturday, collecting ₹19.90 crore, followed by a robust ₹26.70 crore on Sunday, marking a 34% increase from the previous day. This upward trajectory underscores the film’s strong appeal, especially among family audiences and Aamir Khan’s loyal fanbase.
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Sitaare Zameen Par recorded an impressive 50.70% Hindi occupancy on Sunday, with evening shows peaking at 72.31%. Urban hubs like Chennai (69.33%), Bengaluru (61%), Mumbai (59%), and Jaipur (59%) led the charge, while Tier-2 cities like Chandigarh (55.33%) also showed strong turnout. The film’s Tamil and Telugu versions contributed modestly, with occupancies of 41.59% and 21.92%, respectively, on Sunday.
“Sitaare Zameen Par has benefitted immensely from digital-age word-of-mouth,” said trade analyst Taran Adarsh. “Its exceptional performance in high-end multiplexes beyond metros and decent gains in mass pockets highlight its universal appeal. The Monday numbers will be crucial in determining its long-term run.”
The film’s narrative, centered on a disgraced basketball coach (played by Aamir Khan) who finds redemption while training neurodivergent athletes, has been lauded for its heartfelt storytelling and inclusivity. Genelia Deshmukh’s pivotal role has also earned praise, marking a career milestone as the film surpasses her previous highest-grosser, Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na (₹55.36 crore).
Despite competing with Akshay Kumar’s Housefull 5, Sitaare Zameen Par has emerged as a frontrunner, with early estimates suggesting a worldwide gross of ₹95 crore, including ₹26 crore from overseas markets. However, some X posts have raised concerns about a potential 50-55% drop in Monday morning shows, which could impact its weekday performance.
As the film enters its first weekday, all eyes are on its ability to sustain momentum. With a reported budget of ₹90 crore, Sitaare Zameen Par is poised to aim for the ₹100 crore mark domestically if it maintains steady collections. For now, Aamir Khan’s latest offering continues to light up the box office, proving that content-driven cinema still has the power to captivate audiences.
